A holiday transformation in the Carriage House
daughter of R.A. Long and an accomplished equestrienne.
The Carriage House will be the temporary home of the Fairy Princess during the restoration of Corinthian Hall. During the holiday season, the first floor of the Carriage House will be reconfigured as a winter wonderland.
The north entrance to the building leads to an entry gallery that exhibits the history of the Fairy Princess. It will also feature images of the original Carriage House and information about its history. Ultimately, this area of the building will be a gallery of Loula Long’s equestrian accomplishments.
The throne room for the Fairy Princess will be in the space that housed Loula’s collection of horse carriages. In the future, this large room will be repurposed as a carriage gallery housing the collection.
The former stalls in the east wing of the Carriage House will serve as the Fairy Princess Winter Wonderland activity space during the 2009 holiday season. This large space represents a future auditorium – the first auditorium on the Museum grounds.
The Museum’s igloo returns for the holidays
During the Fairy Princess events this holiday season, this activity room will feature arts and crafts activities for children, as well as a very special attraction – the Kansas City Museum’s igloo.
A recreation of the Museum’s famous igloo will be presented for a limited time. Visitors can crawl into the igloo for an experience much like those that Museum patrons had when the original igloo was formerly on display on the third floor of the Museum.
Through the generous support of Zona Rosa, the event sponsor for the Fairy Princess Winter Wonderland,
the Museum is bringing back the igloo to rekindle fond memories for many adults who visited the Museum
as children.
History of the Fairy Princess
The Kansas City tradition of presenting the Fairy Princess dates back to 1935, originating in the Kline's department store downtown. In recent decades, the Fairy Princess legacy has been associated with the Kansas City Museum, which has developed it into a signature holiday attraction.
