Learn What's Happening Next at the Museum
As the restoration of the Kansas City Museum at Corinthian Hall gets underway, you'll see some of the first significant changes in the neighboring Carriage House, which has been home to the Museum's Natural History Hall for many decades. The Collection of Animals Heads West This year marks the retirement of science education from the Museum's programs. The animal specimens currently on exhibit will be transferred to other regional centers to continue their already-long public service. The buffalo, polar bears, beavers and other prized specimens, which have been part of the Museum for as many as 60 years, will be moving to the Cheyenne Bottoms Wetlands Education Center in the Sternberg Museum of Natural History at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, and to the Ozark Museum of Natural History in Cedarcreek, Missouri. Restoration of the Carriage House The Museum's Natural History Hall will be restored to the building's original purpose as a Carriage House for the R.A. Long family. Daughter Loula Long Combs' famous and extensive collection of horse carriages will return to the Carriage House after restoration is complete. The two-story building originally contained horse stalls, a harness and tack room, and an elevator which could lift vehicles to the second floor. The Long family's stable hands had living quarters on the second floor. Follow the restoration of this important Kansas City landmark and be the first to know what's planned.
